TWO STRONG HANDS GRAB me and keep me upright as I’m pulled against a hard chest. “Hey, hey. What’s going on? Are you feeling unwell? Do you want me to call Mrs. Hudson?”

I lift my eyes to look at Marc and the worry I see in his gaze makes me cry harder.

“No,” I say between bouts of tears. “Reid and I had a fight. He was—”

“An asshole?” Marc finishes for me. “That doesn’t surprise me. Reid Hudson, his twin brother and their friends are fucking scumbags. No wonder they get along so splendidly with that filthy slut. I’m sorry if you’re Kaya’s friend but you should know what kind of family you’re marrying in.”

I take a deep, shuddering breath and look at Marc with different eyes. He’s attractive in a very posh, slightly rigid kind of way. It’s something about the clothes he wears and his posture. He’s tall and fit but stockier than Reid, reminding me of Hoyt. He has the kind of physique of someone who’ll definitely become overweight once they get a job behind a desk and stop working out so much.

However, it isn’t just his good looks that make me stop to look at him right now. It’s the venom in his tone when he mentions Reid and Kaya, the hateful darkness in his eyes that calls out to me because Kaya’s enemy can definitely be my friend.

“I’m not Kaya’s friend. She wants Reid and she hates me because he’s with me. She’s poisoned him against me and now he wants a prenup and a paternity test ...”

He looks at me with a shrewd little smile, titling his head to one side. “And obviously you don’t want a prenup. Or the test?”

I nod, drying my tears.

“And would I be rude and totally off base if I guessed that the paternity test might throw a wrench in your plans?”

Normally his tone would offend me and make me bristle but let’s face it, once those results come, there won’t even be a reason for a prenup because Reid will dump me and get back to his slutty stepsister. And I’ll be broke. “No, you wouldn’t be completely off base,” I admit and to my own surprise, the whole story comes out.

The bet with Ollie, how I was doomed to lose because Reid was always too wasted to even get hard for me.

How I made him believe that we were sleeping together when I realized that he was into Kaya. “And then I got dumped last year during a pledge party. He started dating her,” I conclude. “I was furious because Ollie seemed to be into her too. So when I got pregnant ...”

Marc’s smile widens. “It was the perfect way to get back at all three of them. Separate Reid and Kaya, win the bet with Oliver.”

He gets me. “Yeah, and also the perfect way to keep my lifestyle after Lord Wellesley cut me off. And now I’ll lose everything when that paternity test comes back confirming that Reid isn’t the father,” I admit hopelessly, feeling the tears surging again.
